Japan's top government spokesperson on Friday reiterated that Japan and the International Olympic Committee had previously agreed to "jointly" evaluate and deal with the impact of postponement, including costs.

His comments come after the IOC yesterday announced it has set aside $800 million for loans and payments arising from the postponement.

It is still unclear how big the total postponement bill will be with Olympic organizers and public authorities in Japan facing extra costs estimated to run into billions for the one-year postponement.

Media reports in Japan estimate the year-long delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic will cost $2 billion to $6 billion, raising concern that Japan may need to bear the brunt of costs if IOC limits its funding at the current amount.
