Premier League giants Manchester United have announced plans to build a new 100,000-capacity stadium instead of expanding their current Old Trafford home.
The club announced the plans on Tuesday, while also stating that the new stadium will be built on land surrounding Old Trafford.
"Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford," Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s co-owner, said in the release.
"By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home."
The release did not specify how it is that the Premier League club intend to fund the new stadium, with the costs expected to exceed the £2 billion mark.

Reports have suggested that the club would be open to selling the naming rights of their new home to raise money.
Manchester United's Money Woes
Interestingly, the plans to build a new stadium comes at a time when the club is struggling financially.

The club recently announced fresh job redundancies, with the latest round set to clain up to 200 jobs within the club.
And while the job cuts have proved controversial, they were defended by Ratcliffe, who boldly claimed that the club would go out of business if not for these measures.
"The simple answer is the club runs out of money at Christmas if we don’t do those things. It (United) goes bust at Christmas," Jim Ratcliffe was quoted as saying to the BBC and Telegraph.
Manchester United are also struggling on the pitch, with their recent 1-1 draw against Arsenal leaving them in 14th position in the Premier League.
Can Manchester United Qualify for Champions League?
Interestingly, despite currently being well out of the Champions League spots, the club can still play in Europe's premier continental competition in the 2025-26 season.
Their only hope of winning silverware this season is if they win the Europa League, which would also ensure qualification for the Champions League next season.
United drew 1-1 away to Real Sociedad in the first leg of the round of 16 Europa League game, and will need to beat Sociedad at home in order to make it to the next round.
This seems a likelier route to Europe for the side than the league places, which would require them to make up 10 places before the season ends.
