PM Modi Reacts As Harvinder Clinches Historic Gold In Paris
Harvinder Singh wins gold in archery at the Paralympics as PM Modi congratulates him.
Tokyo Games bronze-winner Harvinder Singh became the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, beating Poland's Lukasz Ciszek in a lop-sided final here on Wednesday. The 33-year-old Indian, who lost to Kevin Mather of the USA in the Tokyo Paralympics semifinals before securing a bronze three years ago, put up a dominant show to knock out Ciszek 6-0 (28-24, 28-27, 29-25). Harvinder, who is pursuing Ph.D in Economics, won five back-to-back matches in a single day, showing neither fatigue nor nerves to etch his name in history and clinch India's second medal in archery here.
Both his legs are impaired owing to the side effects of dengue treatment that he underwent as a toddler.
PM Modi Congratulates Harvinder Singh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his social media platform to congratulate Harvinder Singh on his massive accomplishment.
PM Modi in his tweet wrote, “A very special Gold in Para Archery! Congratulations to Harvinder Singh for winning the Gold medal in the Men's Individual Recurve Open at the #Paralympics2024! His precision, focus and unwavering spirit are outstanding. India is very happy with his accomplishment. #Cheer4Bharat.”
Harvinder's Road To Gold
Harvinder Singh showed no signs of fatigue or tiredness as he defeated Lukasz Ciszek of Poland in the finals of men's indivual recurve open at the Paralympics 2024. At the start of the day, Harvinder defeated Lung-Hui Tseng of Chinese Taipei by a score of 7-3. He then went on to defeat Indonesia’s Setiwan in the 1/8 rounds.
In the quarterfinal, Harvinder defeated Colombia's Hector Julio Ramirez. In the semi-final Harvinder went on to face Aarb Ameri Mohammad Reza whom he defeated to reach the finals and secure a medal for India. In the finals, Harvinder faced Lukasz Ciszek of Poland and succesfully defeated him to secure a historic gold for India.
