As the Paris 2024 Olympics kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony, Pakistan's participation quickly became a topic of contention and disappointment among its citizens and journalists. The nation, boasting a population of over 240 million, has sent a contingent of just 18 members to the Games, with only 7 athletes and 11 officials.
This stark contrast between the country's size and its Olympic representation sparked a flurry of criticism and trolling, particularly following remarks made by a commentator during the opening ceremony on July 26.
The commentator's comment, "Pakistan is a country of over 240 million people, but only 7 athletes are competing at the Olympics," struck a chord with many, prompting widespread reactions on social media. Pakistani journalists shared clips from the opening ceremony, expressing their disappointment and sense of embarrassment at the situation.
The small group of Pakistani athletes includes some notable names and hopefuls. Among them is javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, seen as the country's best chance for a medal. Other athletes include shooters Ghulam Mustafa Bashir, competing in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event, Gulfam Joseph, who will participate in the 10m Air Pistol and 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team events, and Kishmala Talat, also competing in multiple pistol events.
