Apple’s next big update for the iPhone is coming in April, bringing the next wave of Apple Intelligence features. The next iOS update will also expand Apple Intelligence to more markets, including India where Apple’s AI services will be available in Indian English. But that is not the only addition specifically for iPhone users in India.
What's new in iOS 18.4 for Indian users?
With the iOS 18.4 update, Apple will expand support for Indian languages in the Apple Keyboard, allowing users to set up to 10 languages, including Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Bangla, Kannada, and Malayalam. Moreover, the Apple Keyboard will also allow typing in three languages without having to go to the settings to choose one. In other words, the top bar on the Apple Keyboard will have two additional language options apart from the default language set, giving users more versatility in choosing a preferred language for a particular contact.
More languages
Apple has also enhanced language support to provide system-wide text translation to an Indian language instead of using its transliteration. The company told Republic Tech that it has implemented a deep localisation of languages into the UI to offer translations in languages, such as Bangla, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Gujarati. While these languages follow a left-to-right script, Urdu follows a right-to-left script. The iOS 18.4 update will optimise the UI to follow LTR and RTL writing systems, depending on the chosen system language.
The new language-centric optimisations in iOS 18.4 will be available to native apps, such as iMessage, Notes, Reminders, and third-party apps, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram, through the Apple Keyboard.
