OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.4-Cyber, a specialised version of its latest flagship AI model designed specifically for defensive cybersecurity work, as competition intensifies in the race to build security-focused AI systems.
The model will not be publicly available. Instead, it is being rolled out in a controlled manner to vetted security vendors, organisations, and researchers, reflecting the sensitive nature of its capabilities.
A Model Built for Defence, Not General Use
GPT-5.4-Cyber is fine-tuned to assist with tasks such as vulnerability research, threat analysis, and identifying weaknesses in software systems. Unlike general-purpose AI models, this version is designed to operate with fewer restrictions in cybersecurity contexts. Access to the model is being managed through OpenAI’s Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) programme, which was launched earlier this year.
The company is expanding the programme to include thousands of verified individual defenders and hundreds of security teams working on critical systems. Higher tiers of verification unlock more advanced capabilities, including access to GPT-5.4-Cyber.

Competition With Anthropic Heats Up
The announcement comes shortly after Anthropic introduced its own cybersecurity-focused model, Mythos, under a controlled initiative called Project Glasswing. Anthropic claims its system has already identified thousands of vulnerabilities across operating systems, web browsers, and other software.
With GPT-5.4-Cyber, OpenAI is entering the same space, signalling growing competition in applying AI to cybersecurity defence.
