TECNO Pocket Go Windows-based AR gaming set debuts at IFA 2024
According to the company, the TECNO Pocket Go is the “world’s smallest AR handheld,” but it needs two pieces of hardware to work.
TECNO has pulled out all the stops at the ongoing IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, showcasing products across categories alongside new technologies. After demonstrating the tri-fold concept phone, the company has announced its foray into the personal gaming segment with the launch of an augmented reality-based gaming set. Based on Windows, the TECNO Pocket Go is a handheld console that works in tandem with AR glasses for an “immersive gaming experience.”
TECNO Pocket Go Specifications
According to the company, the Pocket Go is the “world’s smallest AR handheld,” but it needs two pieces of hardware to work: a controller and a pair of AR smart glasses. While the controller is called Pocket Go Windows handheld, the glasses are known as AR Pocket Vision. The handheld is a miniature Windows 11 gaming PC, using an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS chip with an 8-core, 16-thread CPU that is clocked at 5.1GHz. With a TDP of 35W, the CPU – the company claims – offers “PC-level Large Cooling FAN and three copper pipes” for heat management. The handheld also has a 50Wh battery.
On the other hand, the headset uses a 0.71-inch micro-OLED panel for each eye, capable of offering AR experiences similar to that of a 215-inch television from six metres away. These glasses have adjustable diopter settings of up to 600 degrees and do not need the wearer to use any vision correction. TECNO has introduced what it calls a Smart Box for game management on the Pocket Go handheld; it can also help users transition into a mobile workstation with TECNO’s limited apps.
While TECNO says it is ready to launch the Pocket Go commercially, it has not revealed the price of the AR set. However, the Pocket Go could offer users a new way to play immersive games without costing as much as the Microsoft HoloLens or Apple ’s latest Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
