Thailand Earthquake: Indian Embassy in Bangkok Releases Helpline Number

Thailand earthquake: In the wake of the devastative earthquake, which originated in Myanmar but impacted adjoining areas, including Bangkok, Thailand's major city and a key tourism hub in Southeast Asia, the Indian Embassy has released a helpline number that affected Indian nationals can dial to seek the government's assistance.

Helpline Number for Indians in Thailand

Indians stranded in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand are advised to dial +66 618819218 to contact emergency services offered by the Indian Embassy.

“After powerful earthquake tremors were recorded in Bangkok and in other parts of Thailand, the Embassy is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Thai authorities,” said the Embassy of India in Bangkok, Thailand on X (formerly Twitter).

The Embassy added that “no untoward” incident involving an Indian citizen has been reported so far and that the situation is being closely monitored. “All members of the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe,” the Embassy noted in its post, reassuring Indian citizens of safety as Thailand reels from one of the devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 6.4.

Earthquake 's impact

In addition to Myanmar, tremors were felt in areas up to 1,000km away from the epicentre, such as the Indian states of Meghalaya and Manipur, Bangladesh, China's southwest Yunnan province. However, Thailand's Bangkok was brought to a standstill due to the high-intensity earthquake, which flattened a high-rise building in the Chatuchak district. Local authorities have reported the collapse caused the death of at least three labourers on the site, while several were feared trapped under the rubble. Elsewhere, people were seen running amok as they left their homes in fear.

“I witnessed a five-storey building collapse in front of my eyes. Everyone in my town is out on the road and no one dares to go back inside buildings,” said one of the eyewitnesses.

Meanwhile, no casualties have been reported so far in India even though strong tremors were felt in Northeast India.
