Crimes in Metaverse: UK law enforcement is probing the first reported instance of an alleged rape within a virtual reality (VR) ecosystem, commonly referred to as the ‘metaverse.’ According to media reports, a 16-year-old girl have been subjected to a virtual sexual assault by multiple unknown assailants in an immersive online VR environment.
The victim, wearing a VR headset during the incident, reported emotional and psychological distress akin to physical assault. A senior police official commented on the gravity of the psychological trauma experienced by the teenager, indicating its long-term impact comparable to that of a physical assault.
The evolving case has catalysed a debate about the legal framework around metaverse technologies and the government’s preparedness to address virtual offences, particularly given the UK's existing backlog of rape cases awaiting investigation.
No space for virtual violence: Meta
UK Home Secretary James underlined the emotional impact on the victim saying, "I know it is easy to dismiss this as being not real, but the whole point of these virtual environments is they are incredibly immersive.”

Meanwhile, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and operator of the Horizon Worlds VR game, has responded to the incident. A company spokesperson affirmed that such behaviour contradicts their platform's guidelines.
"The kind of behaviour described has no place on our platform, which is why for all users we have an automatic protection called personal boundary, which keeps people you don't know a few feet away from you," Meta spokesperson said.
As the investigation unfolds, it raises pertinent questions about the intersection of virtual reality, legal jurisdiction, and ethical responsibilities.
