Amazon Pay now supports P2P UPI payments on Android in India

Amazon Pay now supports person-to-person (P2P) UPI-based payments on Android in India. This will allow Android users in India to make instant bank-to-bank transfers using UPI on the Amazon app. This will further allow them to “settle bills and expenses with friends, lend and return money to family, pay rents, pay for services like house-help, newspaper bills, milk subscription and more,” Amazon said in a statement on Monday. 

Users will be also able to make payments from their bank account to local stores or to their Amazon delivery person at doorstep by scanning UPI QR codes using the Amazon app. Making a payment will be as simple as selecting a contact from the phone contact book or entering UPI ID or bank account of the recipient, notes Amazon. 

Amazon says existing solutions are sub-optimal due to lack of a standard user interface, mandatory cool off restriction for new contacts and multiple log in steps – Amazon Pay changes that. Moreover, Amazon Pay makes it easier for users to make repeat payments by displaying recent transactions, Amazon adds. 

Amazon can auto-detect if the recipient is a registered Amazon Pay UPI customer and if yes, it can initiate instant bank to bank transfer. If not, it lets them transfer funds through another BHIM UPI ID or to the recipient’s bank account. “All P2P payments are secured through multi factor authentication involving customer’s phone, SIM details, and UPI PIN.” 

“Our goal is to make Amazon Pay the most trusted, convenient and rewarding way to pay for our customers. The customers trust their Amazon app and we continue to expand payment use cases directly on the app. With this launch, we have the largest selection of shopping and payment use cases on the Amazon Android app which provides added convenience and control to our customers,” Vikas Bansal, who is director, Amazon Pay said while announcing the roll-out. 

For a limited period, Amazon will be offering Rs 120 cashback on sending money through UPI.
