Apple will now build new Maps, announces complete revamp

Apple is on a track to rectify its mistakes from the past and its latest, is the move to rebuild Apple Maps. The company has decided to scrap the old Apple Maps and start rebuilding it from the scratch.

The Cupertino based tech company rolled out the Apple Maps along with iOS 6 in 2012 and was not received well among the users as a full-fledged navigation system.

Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted to the inaccuracies and other glitches of the app and for the sake of users, even asked them to switch to Google Maps or Bing Maps for better accuracy. Since then Apple has undergone nearly 2.5 million changes to bring its app at par with its rival, Google reported TechCrunch.

“Since we introduced this six years ago — we won’t rehash all the issues we’ve had when we introduced it — we’ve done a huge investment in getting the map up to par,” says Apple SVP Eddy Cue in a statement

The changes, however, seemed to be useless as the tech-titan will roll out the new Apple Maps for the iOS 12 beta users. Apple says that the data has been painstakingly collected both with the help of iPhone users on the ground who would send anonymous data packets for the development of the app as well as Apple’s own traditional mapping vans on the field.

“We wanted to take this to the next level,” says Cue. “We have been working on trying to create what we hope is going to be the best map app in the world, taking it to the next step. That is building all of our own map data from the ground up.”

According to the company, areas of and around San Francisco and Bay Area has been covered in the versions which have already been rolled out while the rest of Northern California will be out by this fall. The entire US will be added by the end of the year. And that’s where it’ll stop. The company does not have any plans of expanding its services to any other countries and will remain restricted to the US.

As far as the new updates are concerned, Apple is tweaking the visual representation of maps and trying to make it more appealing and visually descriptive. The map will now have details such as vegetation and distinctions between different types of roads.
