Google Photos wants to be more like Instagram. Yes - you heard it right. Google Photos is adding a new feature - Memories. Well, Google Photos Memories is essentially a private archive of a user's photo.

Interestingly, both - Memories from Google Photos and Stories from Instagram sound alike and obviously, it cannot be a coincidence. Ephemeral stories picked up almost instantly ever since Facebook implemented the feature into all of its apps, including WhatsApp and Messenger, in addition to Instagram and the main Facebook app. Google Photos 'Memories' is rolling out to users.

'Rediscover this day'

Previously, Google Photos provided users with "rediscover this day" reminders. This way, it would prompt users to check out their old photos and videos. Further, it would lead users to Google Photos' Assistant tab. Those reminders will now appear at the top of your photo gallery in Google Photos. Since they help users 'rediscover' a particular day, users need not find same 'Memories' after 24 hours.  It won't show you every photo that you took on that day in previous years, though. Memories will show only a handful of photos.

"We’re using machine learning to curate what appears in Memories, so you don’t have to parse through many duplicate shots, and you can instead reflect on the best ones, where the photos have good quality and all the kids are smiling. We understand that you might not want to revisit all of your memories, so you’ll be able to hide certain people or time periods, and you have the option to turn this feature off entirely," said Shimrit Ben-Yair, Director of Google Photos.
