YouTube just got a taste of its own medicine. In what could be an ironic moment in YouTube’s history, YouTube’s Rewind 2018 video happens to be the most disliked video ever uploaded on YouTube.

Earlier this month, YouTube Spotlight channel uploaded a video titled “YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind” with a hashtag #YouTubeRewind. In such a short span of just over a week, the video has garnered 126 million hits, which is impressive! What’s not so impressive is the fact that 11 million users so far have disliked the video.

For those who don’t know, YouTube videos show a count of how many users have liked the video and how many of them have disliked the video. In spite of the fact that well over 2 million users so far have also liked the video, the ratio between the number of likes and dislikes has what put YouTube in an embarrassing situation.

This is neither the first nor the last video to have garnered more dislikes than likes on YouTube, but YouTube community is clearly in splits as far as the YouTube Rewind 2018 video is concerned.

YouTube Rewind series is YouTube’s way of putting some of their biggest trends and content creators emerged over the course of a year in a spotlight.

While we don’t know for sure what went wrong with this year’s Rewind video, we decided to dig a little bit deeper into it. We decided to compare the performance of this year’s YouTube Rewind video to those uploaded in the last three years. To anyone’s surprise, this is what we found out:

YouTube Rewind 2017 video has reached 214 million hits. But we are not comparing the number of hits here simply because the last year’s Rewind video has been around for over a year. So it won’t be a fair comparison. But if we look at the reaction counter, the Rewind 2017 video has so far earned close to 4 million likes and 2 million dislikes.

Similarly, YouTube Rewind 2015 and 2016 videos have more likes than dislikes. So if we look at the trend, something seems to have gone wrong only with this year’s YouTube Rewind video. Whether it was a selection of those featured in the video or something else, it’s up to YouTube and viewers to decide.

What do you think went wrong with the YouTube Rewind 2018? Let us know your views in the comments.
