Software giant Microsoft has announced new Skype for Web. As a result, all desktop users with Windows 10 and Mac OSX10.12 or higher can use Skype features such as HD video calling and call recording right inside their browser, without a standalone desktop app. However, new Skype for Web currently supports only Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome web browsers. As long as you are using any other web browser applications like Firefox, Opera or Apple’s Safari, Skype for Web won’t work for you.

How to get started with new Skype for Web

Skype for Web is available at Make sure that you have the updated version of Google Chrome or Edge installed and running your computer.

Step 1: Go to and open the new Skype for Web desktop interface.
Step 2: You will be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account (@outlook or @hotmail).
Step 3: If you don’t have Microsoft account already, sign up for one. Otherwise, Sign in.
Step 4: You can also create an account with your mobile number.
Step 5: Once you are inside the new Skype for Web, you should be able to see all its features.

Firefox, Opera or Safari users can download the standalone Skype app on their desktop.

Features of new Skype for Web

HD video calling

Microsoft brings Skype’s HD video calling feature for Web. The feature has always been a part of Skype’s desktop app. But when it comes to video calling over the desktop browser, connectivity factor plays an important in offering a smooth, stutter-free experience.

Call recording

In addition to HD video calling, new Skype for Web also provides users with an ability to record important meetings with their colleagues or clients.

Notifications panel

You can keep a tab on everything you have missed in your notifications panel. All you need to do is click the bell icon so that you can see reactions to your messages, @mentions in group conversations or your message has been quoted by someone.

Search within conversations

This perhaps is the most important feature as it allows users to search through their messages using keywords and phrases. There is a search box for every conversation so that you can search what you are looking for and a matching term will appear.

Media gallery

It gathers all the photos and video you have sent or received over Skype. All you need to do is click on the option ‘Gallery’ under the chat name and see all the multimedia files, photos and links in the conversation.
