TikTok arrest: Police held two for dancing to Punjabi songs and hurting religious sentiments

According to a new report, two men from Haryana were arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The police arrested Sarvjit Singh and Mandeep Singh for dancing to Punjabi songs in a TiKTok video on Sunday. The duo was recording the video in the Golden Temple complex.

The incident came to light after the viral TikTok video started making rounds on social media. A police complaint was lodged after the matter was brought to the notice of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) authorities.

A case has been registered under Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Section 295 of the IPC covers injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.

The SGPC authorities have already banned the videography in the Golden Temple complex. Earlier, three girls recorded a TikTok video in the Golden Temple. The apology was sought after the SGPC authorities raised objections.

The TikTok ban controversy was finally put to rest last week after the Madras High Court ruled in favour of TiKTok and lifted the interim ban on the video-sharing app. Despite the high court’s ruling, TikTok is still missing from Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The ban on TikTok was lifted with the condition that it should not be used to host obscene videos. A bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and S S Sundar of the Madurai bench of the high court warned that if any "controversial" video violating its conditions were found posted, it would be considered a contempt of court.

The High Court had on April 3 directed the Centre to ban the mobile app TikTok, which is used to create short videos, as it voiced concern over "pornographic and inappropriate content" being made available through such apps.

TikTok owner ByteDance plans to invest $1 billion in India over the next three years and increase the number of employees in India to 1,000 persons by the end of this year.
