Amazon is updating its existing Echo and Echo Dot speaker lineup in India with new versions, adding more functionality while keeping intact their mainstream pricing. The standard Echo is perhaps getting the biggest update with hardware seen in the more premium Echo Plus, while Amazon is adding a bright LED display to its entry-level Echo Dot so it can now show you the time in real time. While the new Echo – or third-generation Echo – has been launched in India at a price of Rs 9,999, the Echo Dot with clock will cost Rs 5,499. Both the products will ship later this year with pre-orders beginning now.

Amazon says the third-generation Echo has the same audio architecture as the Echo Plus with neodymium drivers – including a 3-inch woofer. The design has also been updated slightly and there’s also a new blue colour variant to boot in addition to grey, black and white. The Echo has served as a very likeable product in Amazon’s Echo portfolio that sits between its entry-level Echo Dot and high-end Echo Plus. It’s basically the Echo Plus minus a smart home hub, and its more mainstream pricing means, more people tend to pick it up unless of course they also want the hub.

As for the Echo Dot, Amazon says that the most common or frequently asked query among Echo Dot users has been about the time, which is why it is adding a clock to it in its new avatar. The LED display that Amazon has put in here can also “automatically adjusts based on the brightness of the room, so you can easily see the time.” The rest of the deal is your regular Echo Dot – the design remains the same too.

In addition to the Echo third generation and Echo Dot with clock, Amazon has also launched its most premium high-end smart speaker to date, aka the Echo Studio in India at a price of Rs 22,999. The Echo Studio is notably the world’s first smart speaker to support 3D audio – there's also Dolby Atmos, plus a total of five drivers and a 24-bit DAC.
