Sony has launched a new Walkman to commemorate the anniversary of its very first Walkman which was launched exactly 40 years ago. The new Walkman, called the Walkman NW-ZX507 is Android-powered and is in fact driven by Android 9.0 (Pie). This does not play your old tape cassettes and compact discs (CDs). It plays songs digitally, and through a MicroSD card and USB Type-C – both of which are supported.

The Sony Walkman NW-ZX507 has been launched at the ongoing IFA 2019 conference. This device would initially be offered for purchase in Europe. Other key technical specifications of Sony’s new Walkman include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and Wi-Fi connectivity. It also has a 3.6-inch HD touchscreen. Internal storage, offered is 64 GB. Its battery life is claimed to offer a playback time of upto 20 hours on a single charge. It also works with streaming applications (Apps).

At this point in time, the Sony Walkman NW-ZX507 does invoke old memories of yesteryears wherein almost everybody roamed the streets with a Walkman in the pocket and earphones. This Walkman played tape cassettes and were hugely popular in India qualifying as being the first amongst the first to offer audio playback on the go. These used conventional AA batteries for power.

The latest Walkman also looks a lot like the classic Walkman, and loyalists should notice almost no difference. The newer devices potentially compete with some of the “multimedia smartphones” which have replaced even Apple iPods. With the new NW-ZX507 now live, it only remains to be seen as to how it would be priced because if it is priced high; chances are that people might just go for a relatively premium Android smartphone or even an iPhone. Nonetheless, Sony deserves some appreciation for having kept the Walkman Deja-Vu alive.
