Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is reportedly testing its own VoWiFi service across select states such as Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Telangana. It could be the next big thing for Jio after it disrupted India’s telecom industry by rolling out mobile network and internet services.

In a nutshell, however, this is not the first time we have heard anything about Jio’s plan to commercially launch its voice-over WiFi (VoWiFi) services across the country. Back in July, we heard about reports speculating that Jio VoWiFi services may be under testing. If recent reports are to believe, the commercial launch of JioWiFi services could be imminent.

Jio WiFi launch date, features and availability

A recent TelecomTalk report shows a screenshot that was taken from an iPhone, which goes on to suggests that it was latched onto Jio WiFi. It has been quite some time since we have been hearing reports about Jio WiFi services. According to a report, Jio WiFi service is now expected to see a commercial launch sometime in January 2019.

At the time of its initial launch, Jio WiFi is said to be limited to Jio-to-Jio network. But eventually, Jio is likely to expand the service to other networks. In addition to smartphones, Jio WiFi services are likely to integrate within JioPhone as well. Making JioPhone compatible with its WiFi services makes sense given its reach. Earlier, Jio claimed to have sold over 200 million JioPhone devices.

Jio WiFi service is expected to be beneficial across rural areas where the network is often weak, and JioPhone’s cost-effective value-for-money proposition should help Jio bolster its presence and network reach further into rural areas of the country.
