Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ at its Unpacked 2019 keynote event in New York on August 7. But it had one more device up its sleeve – an ARM-based laptop called the Galaxy Book S – that was the star of the show – the showstopper if you may. This is because, the industry for long has been fascinated by ARM-based laptops – and Samsung launching one is big news. For fans, enthusiasts as well as critics.

The Galaxy Book S follows on the heels of the Galaxy Book 2. But then the Galaxy Book 2 was a 2-in-1 convertible – while the Galaxy Books S is a full-fledged Windows 10 laptop. Unlike the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850-powered Galaxy Book 2, the Galaxy Book S packs Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8cx computing platform “with 40 percent greater CPU performance, 80 percent greater graphics performance and added memory bandwidth.”

The whole emphasis of ARM-based laptops is to bridge the gap between a smartphone and PC, offering a full-blown Windows experience inside a thin and light chassis – with the fan-less design further enhancing thermals. The setup should entail in improved battery life as well – the Galaxy Book S is claimed to offer “23 hours of continuous video playback with only one charge,” according to Samsung

There’s also the always-on aspect with quick boot-up times as opposed to traditional Windows machines. The Galaxy Book S also comes with LTE support.

Elsewhere, the Galaxy Book S has a 13.3-inch 1080p TFT touchscreen display and stereo speakers tuned by AKG. There’s 8GB RAM and up to 512GB storage which is expandable by up to 1TB via a micro-SD card slot.

“Galaxy Book S combines the best mobility features Samsung has to offer with Microsoft’s leading productivity solutions and Qualcomm Technologies’ performance capabilities to deliver the best mobile productivity experience available in a mobile device today,” DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics said in a press statement.

The Galaxy Book S will be available for buying in select markets at a starting price of $999 from September.
