Samsung may be more famous for creating a fire and not for helping people put it out (Remember exploding Galaxy Note 7 disaster, anyone?) However, Samsung now wants to help people put out a fire, courtesy of its smashing fire extinguisher called ‘Firevase’. As its name suggests, Firevase is a throwable flower vase that can douse a small fire within seconds. And design-wise, it looks just like any other traditional flower vase.

Firevase is a translucent red tube made out of synthetic plastic polymer while the center compartment can accommodate flowers or any other plants. According to Samsung, the biggest differentiator between its Firevase and other decorative containers is its ability to save lives. It contains mixture of potassium carbonate that can suppress fire upon impact, thus putting out flames by smashing Firevase right into a fire.

According to a report, Samsung originally produced up to 1 lakh Firevases as part of a publicity campaign to encourage the use of home fire extinguishers in South Korea. In spite of the fact that a home fire extinguisher has been mandatory since 2017, not more 60 per cent of households in South Korea currently own a fire extinguisher.

“In South Korea, over 10,000 residential fires occur every year. Despite a new law that required all homes in South Korea to have a fire extinguisher by 2017, the Seoul-based insurance company's research showed that 58 per cent of homes still didn’t have one. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance said that 81 per cent of respondents confirmed that they were now more aware of the importance of having a fire extinguisher at home,” said Deezen report.

The campaign saw a significant rise (8 per cent) in the number of homes equipped with a fire extinguisher. Samsung is now producing 200,000 more of Firevases.
