For those unaware, Xiaomi isn’t just about crazy affordable smartphones. Xiaomi also sells crazy affordable smart TVs. On Thursday, Xiaomi launched a new affordable smart TV – in China to begin with – under its newly independent Redmi sub-brand. Called simply the Redmi TV, the new smart TV from Xiaomi, brings a 70-inch 4K HDR screen at a price of CNY 3,799 which when translated into INR comes out to be just under Rs 40,000.

The 70-inch 4K Redmi TV supports HDR and is powered by a quad-core Amlogic processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, two USB ports, three HDMI ports and AV. It comes with Dolby Audio and DTS-HD surround sound. Software inside is Xiaomi’s Android-based PatchWall.

Xiaomi literally took India’s smart TV market by storm when it launched the 55-inch Mi TV 4 in India last year – a 55-inch 4K-ready smart TV that was also very sleek and good looking for Rs 39,999 was hard to imaging at that time. A year later, Xiaomi has built up a comprehensive portfolio of smart LED TVs in India ranging from around Rs 13,000 to around 40,000 – there's a little something for everybody. Xiaomi has also built up stocks. Initially sold online only, and through flash sales, Xiaomi’s Mi TVs are now readily available across online as well as across over 500 Mi Preferred Partner stores across 9 cities from where potential buyers can ‘experience and buy’ these products.

The Redmi TV, should Xiaomi launch it in India, will be even more compelling. Just like the 55-inch Mi TV 4 was way ahead of its time in terms of specs and pricing, the 70-inch Redmi TV could mean even more bang for the buck – for those looking to buy a 70-inch smart TV that is.

That said, now that Xiaomi’s Redmi has officially forayed into the smart TV market, it won’t be long before it comes up with more size options – but again, that is something only time will tell.

In other news, Xiaomi also launched the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro phones alongside the Redmi TV. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is officially the first smartphone brand in the world to come with a 64MP main camera – while the Redmi Note 8 tries to bring Redmi Note 8 Pro-like experiences at an even more affordable pricing.
