Apple started letting iPhone users delete pre-installed system apps with iOS 10. With watchOS 6 Apple will be bringing the same flexibility to the Apple Watch. While core apps like heart rate and messages will remain, it will be possible to remove almost every first-party app on your Apple Watch with watchOS 6. This is possibly the biggest update to the Apple Watch after Apple announced its own dedicated App Store, freeing the wearable from the shackles of the iPhone – again, coming through with watchOS 6.

Currently, Apple allows Apple Watch users to delete all third-party apps – there's also the option to delete certain iOS apps from your iPhone which also removes them from your Apple Watch. With watchOS 6, users will be easily able to delete previously non-removable apps like alarm, timer and others, as well as health apps like ECG on their Apple Watch – much like how one would delete other third-party apps on it.

The feature makes sense now that the Apple Watch is getting its own App Store, so users will be able to re-install these apps as and when they like. Having the option to delete system apps you’re less likely to use will be particularly useful for those looking for more storage out of their Apple Watch to invest in other apps.

Apple announced watchOS 6 at its annual WWDC keynote event in San Jose, California in early June. As is customary, watchOS 6 brings a host of new capabilities to the Apple Watch - it’s out in developer preview now and will be available for all this fall, which is in September. Some of these include a menstrual cycle tracking app, a noise app for detecting sound levels that could negatively impact hearing, a new trends tab in the activity app for tracking long-term progress, and not to mention, tons of new Watch faces for customisation.

But the real stand-out feature coming to the Apple Watch with the watchOS 6 update is its own App Store. Having the ability to delete system apps is another valuable addition.
