Following a recent Delhi High Court ruling that bars it from selling or advertising its ZenFone lineup of smartphones or any other product with Zen branding, Asus has announced that it will launch the Asus ZenFone 6 as the Asus 6Z in India. The rebranded Asus ZenFone 6 will be launched in India on June 19, and it will be available for buying from online retail website Flipkart – much like any other Asus phone.

Asus has been barred for selling Zen-branded phones (and other devices) in India for allegedly infringing on an existing trademark for the word Zen owned by Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd. Telecare has alleged that it holds the rights to the marks Zen and Zenmobile under the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and has been selling feature phones, smartphones, tablets and accessories under the branding since 2008 - Asus started selling ZenFones in India only in 2014.

The ruling couldn’t have come at a worse time for Asus – the company was gearing to launch its flagship product in India after all. And even though the ruling will come into effect after eight weeks starting May 28, Asus decided to play safe and rebrand the ZenFone 6 to just 6Z – this should allow Asus to go ahead with the launch and sales of the phone without a hassle. The next hearing is scheduled for July 10 wherein Asus will try to overturn the ruling.

Specs wise, there should not be any difference between the ZenFone 6 and the 6Z, which means, the main USP of the phone should still be its flip-up camera module, and high-end flagship specs including Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 mobile processor.

A quick refresh on the Asus ZenFone 6 specs – the phone comes with a 6.4-inch 1080p+ display, a Snapdragon 855 processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB storage which is further expandable, Android 9 Pie-based Zen UI 6 software, and a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The ZenFone 6 has a 48MP primary camera with Sony’s IMX586 sensor. There’s also a secondary 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 125-degree field-of-view. The rear cameras double as front cameras in the ZenFone 6.
