It seems like state-led telco BSNL has upped the data offerings under the ambit of its Rs 399 prepaid scheme. As per the new details, subscribers should be able to use up to 3.21GB data per day now.

These details are also currently reflecting on the official recharge portal of BSNL. Earlier, the per day data offered under the Rs 399 prepaid scheme was 1GB; now it is 3.2GB. Other benefits under the scheme include unlimited free voice calling and 100 text messages per day, along with free calls even while roaming (including in the Mumbai and Delhi BSNL telecom circles). The scheme also introduces free PRBT with unlimited song changes allowed.

The validity of the BSNL Rs 399 initiative is 74 days. Now, the increased data offering under this plan; it was 1GB per day earlier; represents a transitional shift potentially having subscribers in focus more than competition with incumbent telcos (even Reliance Jio).

In related news, incumbent telco Airtel has come out with a semi-long duration prepaid recharge scheme that is priced at Rs 289. This plan is valid for 48 days and comes with the conventional benefits viz free unlimited voice calling and 1GB data per day along with free roaming and 100 daily text messages.

Hence, with “package systems” of prepaid recharges being the new order in the Indian telecom sector, this trend is only expected to intensify considering the fact that smartphone penetration now has undoubtedly been at a high (with Chinese phone brands dominating the scene in multiple categories of smartphone shipments) with feature phones also still relevant (thanks to JioPhone and Nokia phones), the sheer number of first-time mobile-phone users could only experience an upward surge. Hence, these unlimited package schemes theoretically make sense.

BSNL could deploy its 4G-LTE networks from February 2019 across multiple circles. As of now, BSNL has an annual recharge plan (offering 3G data) that is priced at Rs 1699 valid for 365-days.
