Not only does the Redmi K20 series marks the beginning of a new era for Xiaomi, it will also mark the first time that the company will allow buyers to reserve a unit ahead of launch. Considering how difficult it is to buy a Xiaomi phone still – even though Xiaomi has clearly come a long way from its long-dreaded ‘flash’ sales days – pre-booking a unit of a highly-anticipated Xiaomi product could be a dream come true for prospective buyers. In this case, it is actually two products – the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro.

Xiaomi on Monday announced that it will start taking pre-orders for the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro from July 12 starting 12 noon – Xiaomi is calling it an ‘Alpha Sale’ and it “will allow Mi Fans to reserve a Redmi K20 series smartphone for themselves and get the device before it reaches the wider market.”

Xiaomi will launch the Redmi K20 series in India on July 17 and the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro phones will be sold via Flipkart and Mi.com/in, at least initially, before being more widely available via offline channels.

Those looking to pre-book a Redmi K20 or Redmi K20 Pro will be able to do so by paying a token amount of Rs 855 – which will be refundable should the buyer decide to not make a final purchase. The “final check-out for the purchase will be announced on the 17th of July launch,” Xiaomi says. Which is when the company will announce pricing and availability specifics of the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro phones.

Already launched in China (and Europe as the Mi 9T) the Redmi K20 series marks the first time a Redmi phone charts flagship territory. While the Redmi K20 Pro is a top-tier flagship phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, the Redmi K20 tries to offer almost all its features at an even more affordable price. Both the phones have so much in common, it would be difficult to point out the differences without sifting through their respective spec-sheets.

The Redmi K20 Pro comes with a 3D glass build (with a flashy gradient design), a 6.39-inch 1080p+ AMOLED screen with an in-screen fingerprint reader, a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, triple rear cameras (48MP+13MP+8MP), a 20MP pop-up selfie camera, Android Pie-based MIUI 10 software, and a 4,000mAh battery with 27W fast charging via USB Type-C.

The Redmi K20 meanwhile swaps the Snapdragon 855 with a mid-range Snapdragon 730, the 48MP Sony IMX586 with a 48MP Sony IMX582, and drops down the fast charging to 18W. Rest of the specifications (as well as the design) remain the same.
