If you have been getting increased spam calls of late, then the reason for this could be telcos themselves, as per a Truecaller report which has placed India in the second position as far as incoming spam calls are concerned. The first position, here, is bagged by Brazil.

This Truecaller report, applicable to 2018 (till the current time period), also has positive statistics for India; and as per these, there was a slight decrease in the overall spam calls to India; and this change has been marginal and in the range of 1.5%.However, there are disturbing statistics for Brazil as the Truecaller report states that on an average Brazilians received around 37.5 spam calls per Truecaller user in a month.

Also, the number of spam calls originating from telecom operators desirous of informing their respective customers about various new offers and recharge-related aspects has reportedly been on the rise. These calls have also said to have doubled, in comparison to 2017. Gauging these, the need for spam call filtering apps and tools within mobile devices become imminent.

Truecaller states that a whopping 91% of all spam calls have been from telcos this year; followed by marginal scam calls and telemarketing calls. Hence, you could register for TRAI’s Do-Not-Disturb (DND) services to keep “unwanted” promotional calls at bay.

At this juncture, it is worth noting that TRAI has now seemingly eased regulations and time taken to port out from existing telcos. As per the amended Mobile Number Portability (MNP) regulations, it could only take 2 working days to port operators within the same telecom circle, and a maximum of 4 working days for different telecom circles. Also, telcos would be liable to pay Rs 10000 as penalty in case of wrongly rejection of MNP requests from customers.

Here, your Unique Porting Code (UPC) would be valid only for a period of 4 days; as recommended by TRAI. These regulations would be applicable to all regions except that of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and the North-East.
