Watch video: Xiaomi’s ‘foldable phone’ with responsive UI revealed in all its glory

Foldable displays phones are likely to be the next big thing in the smartphone space. Smartphone brands like Samsung, Huawei and Motorola are all preparing to announce their foldable devices sometime this year. In what could be exciting news for all the Xiaomi fans out there, Xiaomi’s purported foldable device has appeared in a live video.

A well-known tipster @evleaks posted a short hands-on video of a tablet-sized device being folded twice and converted into a smartphone. This is what Blass had to say:

“Can't speak to the authenticity of this video or device, but it's allegedly made by Xiaomi, I'm told. Hot new phone, or gadget porn deepfake?”

While don’t know for sure whether Xiaomi has been working on a foldable device, the video shows what appears to be an early prototype of the smartphone.

The video shows creases before the device is folded. It also shows how the UI reacts when either side of the device is folded. Status bar and the navigation tabs alignment change and simply adapt to a new form factor. The panel covers around back with a radius.

Last year, there was a report that Xiaomi could be working on a fold-out design, unlike Huawei and Samsung’s supposed in-folding design. Xiaomi, as a brand, is known for offering affordable handsets in the market. Whether Xiaomi’s foldable smartphone will be cheaper than its competitors is something only time will tell.

In realted news, Xiaomi is releasing a new Redmi phone next week, which is likely to offer a 48MP camera. There was a report last month that Xiaomi could be planning to release a 48MP camera phone sometime in January 2019.
