WhatsApp would stop working on certain Apple iPhones and Google Android mobile operating system (OS) platforms. These platforms have now again surfaced, after being announced officially earlier, as the last date for deactivation is soon approaching. This is 1 February 2020. You would need to upgrade your existing mobile OSes before this date. This for users who are on older iOS, Android platforms.

The “outdated” platforms, according to WhatsApp

As per folks at WhatsApp, if you are an iOS user stuck on older iOS 8 OS iterations, then you would not be able to verify existing accounts or even create new accounts. The cut-off date for WhatsApp getting deactivated for these “older” devices is 1 February 2020. This means that these older WhatsApp versions would be stuck on just that current version and would not be seeded newer updates. Such accounts would even become obsolete. If you are an iPhone user, then the minimum variant of iOS supported is iOS 9.

On the other hand, Android users should remember that the same 1 February 2020 cut-off date is applicable to smartphones running “older” Android 2.3.7 OSes. You should ensure this minimum platform support for WhatsApp to continue to run. Hence, it is worth updating to a newer iOS/Android platform at this point in time, rather than wait till the 1 February 2020 deadline. Keep this date in mind, even though the number of users on older iOS/Android platforms are lesser at this point in time. WhatsApp, in India, has also reached 340 million users making it the country with most users of the instant messaging platform. Even the United States of America (USA) has just 68.1 million users and is in third place behind Brazilian users who account for 99 million. WhatsApp, for the recent elections in India, had worked on checking the spread of fake news on its platform. (Image credit: Pixabay).
