Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro: Every difference that you wanted to know

The Redmi Note 7-series has been a runaway hit in India - Xiaomi says it has sold 20 lakh Redmi Note 7-series phones in India in two months. So much so that Xiaomi is adding a third smartphone to that list – the Redmi Note 7S. The Redmi Note 7S is a very familiar phone, if you know a thing or two about Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro. Long story short, the Redmi Note 7S is a rebranded Redmi Note 7 from China – you can say that it’s a super-charged Redmi Note 7 with better cameras. 

The Redmi Note 7S brings a segment-first 48MP main camera keeping all the other things same as the vanilla Redmi Note 7 – but it’s not the same as the Redmi Note 7 Pro, just to be clear. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is still the ‘pro’ when it comes to Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7-series. The Redmi Note 7S, at best, may be considered as a connecting link between the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro – which is why it’s also slotted in the middle of the two when it comes to pricing.  

Main camera aside, the Redmi Note 7S is such a familiar phone, it is bound to cause a lot of confusion for buyers when it comes to paper specs. Well don’t be – main camera aside, the Redmi Note 7S is literally the same phone as the Redmi Note 7, while the Redmi Note 7 Pro is clearly in a league of its own.  

• The Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S have the same look and feel – they have the same physical dimensions as well. Which is again pretty similar to what you get in the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Xiaomi is using its new aura design scheme across its entire Redmi Note 7 portfolio but while the Redmi Note 7 Pro has a light-bending gradient finish, the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S have solid colours. While the Redmi Note 7 Pro is available in Nebula Red, Neptune Blue and Space Black, the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S come in Onyx Black, Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue. 
• Xiaomi is using Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (on the front as well as on the back) across its entire Redmi Note 7 portfolio. The Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro all come with a P2i hydrophobic coating that makes them resistant to light splashes of water or rain. 
• The Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro all come with a 6.3-inch LTPS 1080p+ display with a teardrop/waterdrop style notch - Xiaomi calls it a dot notch.
• The Redmi Note 7 Pro is the most powerful of the lot – it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor paired with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage. The Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S are both powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor paired with up to 4GB RAM and up to 64GB storage. All the three phones support expandable storage via a hybrid micro-SD card slot.
• The Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro all run Android 9 Pie-based MIUI 10.
• The Redmi Note 7 Pro theoretically has the most compelling cameras – a 48MP main camera with Sony’s IMX586 image sensor, paired with a 5MP sensor for depth sensing aka portrait photography. On the front, the Redmi Note 7 Pro comes with a 13MP camera. The Redmi Note 7S also has a 48MP main camera but it does not have the same 48MP camera sensor as the Redmi Note 7 Pro – the Redmi Note 7S packs a Samsung GM1 sensor – that uses software interpolation to produce high-quality 48MP resolution photos instead of supporting them natively like the Sony IMX586. The 48MP main camera is paired with a 5MP secondary sensor for depth sensing aka portrait photography. On the front, the Redmi Note 7S comes with a 13MP camera. The Redmi Note 7 meanwhile has a 12MP plus 2MP depth rear dual camera system, and a 13MP front camera setup.
• The Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro all pack a 4,000mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 through USB Type-C (Xiaomi isn’t bundling a fast charger in the box with any of the phones).
• Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 7S in India at a starting price of Rs 10,999 for the base variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, going all the way to Rs 12,999 for the top-end variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The Redmi Note 7 meanwhile starts at Rs 9,999 for the base variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, going all the way to Rs 11,999 for the top end version with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The Redmi Note 7 Pro starts at Rs 13,999 for the base variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the top-end variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage costs Rs 16,999.
