Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 phones in India barely a few months after launching the Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Note 7S/Redmi Note 7. That’s not the surprising bit though. What’s really blowing my mind is how Xiaomi has been able to literally re-do these things from ground up even though the Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Note 7S/Redmi Note 7 literally just launched in the country – like a few months ago. The Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 feel fresh, they feel like new devices – from specs to design. That’s a big achievement for Xiaomi.

There’s another thing that’s blowing my mind. The Redmi Note 8 Pro, being the pro, is of course...better specced. But it’s not necessarily the more exciting. The vanilla Redmi Note 8 is. This is because even though it’s vanilla, it punches way above its weight in almost all the departments. It has a flashy gradient glass design, a 1080p+ display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 paired with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage (expandable), 48MP quad rear cameras, and a sizeable 4,000mAh battery with USB Type C fast charging (fast charger in the box). All this, and the Redmi Note 8, still, starts at just Rs 9,999.

Here’s a step by step breakdown of the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 to understand what’s in store:

  • Both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 boast of Xiaomi’s aura design scheme. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back in both the phones. The Redmi Note 8 Pro gives you a choice of three fancier/flashier gradients - Gamma Green, Halo White and Shadow Black. The phone has a 4-sided curved rear, and a glossy frame that’s made of plastic. The Redmi Note 8 is a toned-down affair with a relatively flatter body – like the Redmi Note 7 Pro. The Redmi Note 8 will be available in a choice of four colours - Neptune Blue, Moonlight White, Cosmic Purple and Space Black. Both the phones have rear-mounted fingerprint scanners.

  • Both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 have P2i coating which makes them resistant to accidental splashes. The Pro model also gets IP52-certification for limited water and dust resistance. The Note 8, meanwhile, gets an auto cleaning speaker designed to “release air on a special frequency which helps clean any dust settled on it.”

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.53-inch 1080p+ IPS LCD display with Xiaomi’s dot-notch. The phone uses chip on film technology that allows Xiaomi to greatly reduce the chin on this one – resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of 91.4-per cent. The display also supports HDR. The Redmi Note 8 has a smaller 6.39-inch 1080p+ display with Xiaomi’s dot notch without the fancy chip on film or HDR tech.

  • Under the hood, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a MediaTek Helio G90T processor paired with up to 8GB RAM and up to 128GB storage which is also expandable via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. There’s also liquid cooling for seemingly cooler extended gameplay. The Redmi Note 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor paired with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB storage which is also expandable via a dedicated micro-SD card slot. The Redmi Note 8 does not get liquid cooling.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes in 6GB RAM/64GB, 6GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB configurations. The Redmi Note 8 comes in 6GB RAM/64GB and 6GB/128GB configurations.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro India variant also answers to hands-free Alexa – in addition to another voice assistant. The Redmi Note 8 doesn’t.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a quad camera setup on the rear consisting of a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP depth camera, and a 2MP macro lens. On the front, it has a 20MP camera. The Redmi Note 8 swaps the 64MP main camera with a 48MP main keeping intact the others, an 8MP ultra-wide plus 2MP depth plus 2MP macro. On the front, it has a 13MP camera.

  • The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a 4,500mAh battery with 18W fast charging through USB Type-C. Xiaomi will be bundling a fast charger in the box this time. The Redmi Note 8 packs a 4,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging through USB Type-C (fast charger in the box).

  • Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 8 Pro in India starting at Rs 14,999 for the base variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the 6GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB models have been launched at Rs 15,999 and Rs 17,999 respectively. Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 8 in India starting at Rs 9,999 for the base variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the top end 6GB/128GB model has been launched at Rs 12,999.
