Days after launching the first Qualcomm Snapdragon 730-based phone (Redmi K20), Xiaomi has confirmed that it will also be the first OEM to launch a MediaTek Helio G90T-based phone in India. Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain made the announcement during MediaTek’s Helio G90 launch keynote event in the National Capital on Tuesday. Although details about this phone are scarce, it is possible that we’re looking at the same 64MP quad-camera phone that Xiaomi has recently started teasing for the Indian market.

64MP camera or not, Xiaomi’s upcoming phone with MediaTek’s Helio G90T will be a mid-tier phone (possibly a Redmi phone) focused on gaming. This is because the Helio G90T is focused on gaming.

MediaTek’s Helio G90 mobile chips (Helio G90 and Helio G90T) have seemingly been designed to bring high-end gaming experiences to mid-tier devices – something on the lines of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G. The Helio G90T is claimed to outperform the SD730 by 3 per cent and the SD730G by 7 per cent basis of Antutu scores.

MediaTek’s new chips come with an octa-core CPU with ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores clocked at up to 2.05GHz, and a Mali G76 GPU. These support up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to a maximum of four rear cameras including support for a 64MP shooter. The Helio G90 and Helio G90T will also be the first mobile chips from MediaTek to come with their new HyperEngine technology that has been designed from ground up to boost gaming performance.

That the Helio G90T can support 64MP quad camera setups raises the prospects that the unannounced Xiaomi phone maybe the same deal that the company has started teasing recently.

Manu Kumar Jain recently shared a picture taken with the mystery phone on Twitter, simultaneously confirming that it is coming soon to India. The Twitter post didn’t mention the name of the 64MP sensor, but there’s a high possibility that Xiaomi will be using Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor.

Whether both the phones will be the same or whether Xiaomi is looking to launch two different phones – one that would be gaming-focused and the other being photography-focused – is something only time will tell.
