Xiaomi will launch a 64MP camera-toting Redmi phone in India by the end of this year, the company confirmed on Wednesday. The announcement came on the sidelines of Xiaomi ‘revealing’ its 64MP camera technology at a keynote event in China, making it “the first smartphone company to exhibit the upcoming 64MP imaging technology.” Realme is set to reveal its own 64MP camera technology at a press event in India tomorrow, that is August 8.

Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi phone will feature Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor. Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor works on the same principle as its 48MP GM1 and 32MP GD1 sensors – effectively producing sharper, more detailed 16MP photos in low light, and using software interpolation to produce high resolution 64MP photos as and when required. Samsung had previously confirmed that smartphones equipped with its 64MP GW1 sensor will start shipping sometime in the second half of this year.

Xiaomi showcased some key aspects of Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor at its keynote including smart ISO “which intelligently adjusts the ISO sensitivity based on ambient light intensity” and real-time hardware-supported high dynamic range (HDR) for “richer hues” in photos. The GW1 sensor will theoretically be able to outputs 64MP photos with a resolution of 9248 x 6936 pixels (and up to 19MB in size) but its real advantage will come in the form of brighter, more detailed low light photos when shooting at default 16MP.

Considering how Xiaomi is known for its aggressive pricing, it won’t be surprising if it makes the 64MP smartphone camera a mainstream affair as well. For now, not a lot is known about this Redmi phone though.

Xiaomi has also (previously) confirmed that it will be the first OEM to launch a MediaTek Helio G90T-based Redmi phone in India. Although details about this phone are scarce, it is possible that we’re looking at the same 64MP camera phone that Xiaomi has also started teasing for the Indian market. That the Helio G90T can support 64MP quad camera setups raises the prospects that the unannounced Xiaomi phone maybe the same deal that the company has started teasing.
