World Emoji Day: From 'Mission Mangal' to the Australian Parliament, here's how it was observed

While the internet is flooding with aged selfies of celebrities, athletes and brands, another commonly used item made waves on social media.  A day deemed to a 'global celebration of emoji',  17 July is celebrated as World Emoji Day across the world and is marked by emoji events and product releases in many parts of the world. It first began in 2014 and has gained immense popularity year after year since then.

While the internet is flooding with aged selfies of celebrities, athletes and brands, another commonly used item made waves on social media.  A day deemed to a 'global celebration of emoji',  17 July is celebrated as World Emoji Day across the world and is marked by emoji events and product releases in many parts of the world. It first began in 2014 and has gained immense popularity year after year since then. 

What are emoji?

Emojis are ideograms and smileys used in electronic messages and web pages. Emoji exist in various genres, including facial expressions, common objects, places and types of weather, and animals. They are much like emoticons, but emoji are actual pictures instead of typographic.

How is it observed in different parts of the world?

Emoji have become a crucial form of communication within communication, allowing people to emote their feelings without having to pen them down. Emoji are used for various representational purposes and it has become the trend to have an emoji to represent matters.

Indian actor Akshay Kumar, who is working on his historic film Mission Mangal- the real-life story of the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Mars Orbiter Mission which made Mars more accessible to explore, revealed the emoji made for the film after fans showed much enthusiasm in creating an emoji for the film. The actor took to Twitter to announce the emoji on the eve of World Emoji Day.

Emojipedia, an emoji obsessed page took to Twitter to reveal that Apple had introduced new emojis such as waffle, flamingo, sloth and more, adding to their already-existing emoji collection.  

The Australian Parliament's twitter handle took to share an emoji of the Australian flag along with a smiley emoji.  

A Game of Thrones fan took to Twitter to share his favorite characters' emoji from the show.
