When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, it disrupted not only global health systems but also the way vaccine development was traditionally approached. Suchitra Ella, co-founder of Bharat Biotech while speaking at the Republic India Women's Summit shed light on the rapid development and launch of COVAXIN, India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, during a time of unprecedented uncertainty. "Prior to the pandemic, vaccine development for us was a lengthy process, often spanning 10 to 15 years. It involved rigorous clinical data, regulatory compliance, and international agency approvals," Ella explained. “The pandemic threw us off guard. We didn't know what to do next. The idea of being a country without a vaccine was terrifying, especially with a population of over a billion.”India's ability to vaccinate its massive population posed a unique challenge, one that no country had faced on such a scale. Yet, by 2021-2022, Bharat Biotech proved that it was possible."We had spent the last 25 years developing platform technologies for viral and bacterial vaccines," Ella said. “These platforms, including the technology we used for the swine flu vaccine, laid the groundwork for rapid COVID-19 vaccine development. When the pandemic struck, we were prepared.”Bharat Biotech's readiness was reinforced by its infrastructure—three manufacturing facilities that enabled quick adaptation to the evolving crisis, Ella stressed. Despite the challenges, Ella emphasized the significance of India's success. “We could demonstrate to the world that a billion-person vaccination campaign was possible, and we did it.”
