Ujjain: Diwali , the festival of lights, is celebrated with diverse traditions across the country. In the Bhidavad village of Badnagar tehsil in Ujjain district, a unique ritual unfolds where devotional villagers lie down and allow cows to walk over them, believing it will grant them divine blessings and fulfill their deepest wishes.
According to local beliefs, this practice fulfills the wishes of those who participate. This tradition is observed on the second day of Diwali during Govardhan Puja.

In the video, it has been witnessed by generations of villagers, both young and old. People from surrounding villages also come to participate, often leaving their homes five days before Diwali to reside at the local Mata Bhavani temple.
As soon as the cows pass, the villagers spring to their feet, dancing and celebrating in gratitude and relief.

Fasting for Five Days
People also fast for five days before Govardhan Puja. It is believed that the cows, which are thought to house 33 crore deities, bestow divine blessings when they walk over the devotees . However, this practice raises concerns about safety, as it puts devotees in a precarious situation.
For the people of Bhidavad, this yearly tradition is more than just a ritual, it shows their strong spirituality and deep devotion.
