Opponents of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador marched to Mexico City's main square on Wednesday and set up tents demanding his resignation.

The group entered El Zócalo square, the symbolic and historical center of the city, where they said they were planning to camp until López Obrador stands down.

On Sunday, the group complained that dozens of police blocked protesters from marching to El Zócalo and called it an attack on free speech.

Police have been limiting access to the plaza since the coronavirus pandemic began, as a way to enforce social distancing.

The leaders of the National Anti-AMLO Front (FRENAAA) claimed López Obrador holds too much power, ignores checks and balances and citizens' complaints.

AMLO is an acronym for Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

López Obrador said earlier Wednesday that the protesters were welcome to camp out in Mexico City's main plaza outside his offices in the colonial-era National Palace.

The President himself led numerous protest encampments in his decades as an opposition leader.
