New Delhi: The government of Maldives issued a stern statement after a diplomatic row erupted between India and Maldives over provocative remarks by Maldivian ministers on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier this week, leaders of the Maldives government mocked PM Modi's recent visit to the Lakshadweep island. One of the ministers in question was Maldive's Minister of Youth Mariyam Shiuna who mocked Prime Minister Modi for taking a walk on the Lakshadweep bridge. Another minister was Abdulla Mahzoom Majid who claimed that India is facing challenges in competing with Maldive's bridge.

After the comments received major backlash from many, the government of Maldives issued a statement on the matter. “The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives,” the government said in a statement. While the government maintained that the people of Maldives have “freedom of speech" it made it clear that spreading hatred and negativity is “unacceptable”.  “The Government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners,” the body furthered. While concluding the statement the government assured that “relevant authorities” will “not hesitate” in taking strict action on the matter.

Ex-Maldives President slammed the Muizzu administration

The derogatory remarks by the ministers of the island nation were also slammed by the country's former President Mohammad Nashed. The ex-president called on the Muizzu administration to distance itself from such ministers and called India a “key ally”. What appalling language by Maldives Government official @shiuna_m towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity," Nasheed wrote on X, formally known as Twitter. “ @MMuizzu gov must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy,” he furthered. Nasheed served as the president of the country from 2008 to 2012.

While one deletes the tweet the other one apologises

After receiving significant backlash on the matter, Shiuna immediately deleted her tweet. Whereas, Majid took to X, formally known as Twitter, to apologise for his remarks. “Apologies for any insensitivity in my recent tweet. I recognize the impact of my words, especially considering the enduring Maldives-India friendship led by leaders like @narendramodi,” Majid wrote on X. “Taking full responsibility, committed to greater mindfulness. Thanks for holding me accountable,” he added.
