Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro met with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Friday ahead of the Group of 20 summit in Rome this weekend.

Bolsonaro has been facing calls for his impeachment in Brazil and a senate committee has recommended criminal indictment for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Brazilian leader has been accused of underestimating the severity of the virus.

He is not vaccinated, does not usually wear a mask, and has promoted crowds during the pandemic.

More than 600,000 people in Brazil have died from COVID-19, a country of 212 million people.

Earlier in the day the Brazilian leader took a stroll by the Trevi Fountain, surprising some tourists.

COVID-19 economic recovery and climate change are the two main issues being discussed by the leaders of the world's 20 biggest economies, who are gathering in Rome before heading to Glasgow, Scotland, for the U.N. climate conference.

Bolsonaro will not be going to Glasgow but will remain in Italy for a few days to participate in events in Veneto and Tuscany.
