Sydney New Year's revellers have been put on notice, with the Premier of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, asking people to stay at home.

Ten new coronavirus cases in the state, on top of the 18 cases reported on Wednesday, have led to tougher restrictions, with only five people allowed to visit a home in greater Sydney.

No one is allowed to watch the fireworks from the Sydney Harbour foreshore and outdoor gatherings have been reduced from 50 to 30.

It comes as coronavirus cases have spread beyond Sydney's northern beaches, including a few more in the so-called Croydon family cluster while there are a few individual cases in other parts of greater Sydney.
