The lights of Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate went out at 8:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) on Saturday to mark this year's Earth Hour. The event started in 2007 in Sydney and aims to raise awareness of the climate crisis on a global scale. All over the world, internationally known landmarks turn their lights off.
Climate change and environmental concerns are set to become a major issue in Germany's federal elections later this year. Campaigns manager for WWF Germany, Marco Vollmar, said: "without the issue of climate protection (politicians) will not get through in these elections." Since 2007, over 180 countries and territories have been involved in the campaign.
