Islamabad: An earthquake of magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter Scale hit Pakistan on Wednesday night causing panic in various cities. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) the mild earthquake struck Pakistan at around 10 pm on Wednesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 50 km. The recent tremor comes days after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the region on April 12, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km.

The Pakistan administration is assessing the situation and analysing any reports of loss of lives and property.

According to the experts, Pakistan is among the most seismically active countries due to its unique geological position. It sits at the convergence of two major tectonic plates, the Eurasian and Indian plates. The regions of Balochistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan rest on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while the provinces of Sindh, Punjab , and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate. Pakistan's positioning makes the country highly prone to frequent and often destructive earthquakes.

Pakistan has a history of seismic events, leading to widespread damage and loss of life. The country's position on multiple major fault lines makes it vulnerable to earthquakes.

Further details regarding the earthquake are awaited.
