London: UK’s Heathrow Airport has suspended operations until midnight on March 21 (UK time) after a fire at an electrical substation caused a massive power outage.

The London airport announced that it is experiencing a significant power failure and urged all passengers to avoid traveling to the airport.

Heathrow Airport stated: “Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23:59 on March 21.”

According to reports, the fire has left more than 16,000 homes without power in West London.

The airport authorities added: “We will provide an update when more information on the resumption of operations is available. We know this will be disappointing for passengers, and we want to reassure you that we are working as hard as possible to resolve the situation.”

Several videos on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the airport’s electrical substation.

Speaking to Reuters, a Heathrow spokesperson said there is currently no clear timeline for when power will be restored. The spokesperson also warned that further disruptions are expected in the coming days.

Eurocontrol, which oversees air traffic management across Europe, confirmed that no arrivals are being allowed at Heathrow and that diversion plans are in place for all incoming flights.

Emergency crews and fire services are actively working to contain the situation. Firefighters have rescued 29 people from neighboring properties and evacuated approximately 150 residents for safety.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Heathrow Airport is the largest airport in London and the second busiest in the world.
