Canada PM comments on shooting, virus

Canada's prime minister says the country's parliament will move forward on additional gun control legislation, including a ban on assault-style rifiles following last weekend's mass shooting at killed at least 22 people in Nova Scotia.

Trudeau said Wednesday at his daily briefing that the parliament will work on the measures, despite operating in a limited capacity due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Canada's health agency reported 1,871 coronavirus deaths.

Trudeau did not reveal a timetable to re-open Canada's economy, and said the national government would work with provencial governments, who would ultimately decide when to begin easing restrictions on commerce and social distancing.

He said that decisions regarding immigration and crossings along the US border would be made at the federal level.
