Cars being transported on a cargo ship arrived encased in ice in Russia's Far East earlier this week.

The vessel, ironically named Sun Rio, had encountered bad weather conditions on its journey from South Korea through the Sea of Japan.

When it finally docked in Vladivostok on Monday, dozens of vehicles looked like giant metal popsicles.

The captain told local media that strong waves and wind had covered the cars with water, which soon froze.

The local weather forecasting agency had announced a gale warning in the region last week due to abnormally cold weather.

It warned that temperatures in some areas could drop to -43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit).

That's about seven degrees Celsius (44 degrees Fahrenheit) below the seasonal average.
