3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Isabel Castillo, pregnant recipient of vaccine:

"I have seen studies of pregnant women who have had the coronavirus and have been in the ICU. There are many, and it is worrying, because giving birth with all the risk involved, and above all, having to get into the ICU, is something to worry about. So if being vaccinated reduces that risk, it is more relaxing".

"There are several studies, not only on this vaccine that say (that after being vaccinated) the baby creates antibodies (against COVID-19) too. So the baby could be born with antibodies, I know there is a risk factor, I understand that, and I take that risk, but there are more benefits than downsides to the vaccine."

Health authorities said that this stage women who were at least 16 weeks pregnant and had additional risk factors such as diabetes or obesity were now eligible to get vaccinated.

Health Minister Enrique Paris said in earlier statements that the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine will be prioritized for this group.

Women over 55 and men over 18 will also begin vaccination this week with AstraZeneca's vaccine.

Chile has led one of the fastest vaccination processes in Latin America and the world, but has been slowing down in recent weeks, giving priority to second doses.

Chile has fully immunized over 32 per cent of its population, far more than any other nation in Latin America.

According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, more than 1.1 million infections and more than 25,000 deaths have been recorded in the country.
