China: 100 Indian soldiers take part in 7th World Military Games

India has sent a delegation of about 100 soldiers to take part in the 7th World Military Games in China selected from three different wings of the armed forces.

India has sent a delegation of about 100 soldiers to take part in the 7th World Military Games in China. The soldiers who were selected from three different wings of the armed forces will be competing with military athletes in a tournament which was inaugurated by President Xi Jinping on Friday in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

While Vice-Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta is the chief VIP observer from India for the games, Lieutenant General Sanjay Kumar Jha is the head of the Indian delegation.

China is hosting the Military Games for the first time where 10,000 military officials are expected to participate in 329 events across 27 sports. According to reports, chief VIP observer Dasgupta was presumed to be part of a group call on the Chinese President on Friday after which he was expected to have a meeting with the vice-chairman of Central Military Commission Xu Qiliang on Saturday.

Indians aim to make a better record

The Indian military officials aim to improve the record in the nine-day long Military Games which was inaugurated on Friday. As many as 54 players from the Indian Armed Forces' sports group will be taking part in the games. They will be showing their might in boxing, cycling, diving, shooting, wrestling, tennis among others.

The organisers have built as many as 35 venues for the Military games, out of which 13 are newly-built and 17 others were reconstructed on spots that were earlier run by the city and local universities. On the other hand, five of the venues are temporary.

A quadrennial affair

The theme of the Military Olympics in its seventh edition is 'Military Glory and Peace'. The first Military World Games was inaugurated in Rome in 1955. Ever since it held once in four years just like the main Olympics. Since 1995, International Military Sports Council, also called CISM has been organising the multi-sport event.
