Nearly 1.4 million students returned to schools in Wuhan on Tuesday, the central Chinese city where the coronavirus was first detected in December, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Many of them have been missing school for over eight months.

Prior to the reopening day, faculties of the city's schools carried out training and drills to ensure safety for the incoming students and preventing the spread of COVID-19, local education authorities said.

On their first day of return, many students said they were so excited about the reunion.

"I am feeling very excited because I can finally meet up with my teachers and classmates," said one student.

Concerned about the students' psychological health after a lengthy lockdown, some schools provided counselling.
