Authorities in southern Poland on Sunday captured a small caiman which was earlier spotted by members of the public swimming in a pond in Wrocklaw forest.

After the sighting was reported to the police, a team from Wroclaw Zoo went to the scene, quickly captured the reptile and transferred it to the zoo, where it is being looked after.

According to the zoo, the animal is a dwarf caiman which measures up to 150 centimetres in length.

The zoo suspects the reptile may be an unwanted pet which the owner released it into the wild, where, they say, it had little chance of survival.

"This one is in relatively good shape bearing in mind what it came through. Luckily the weather has not yet been so cold to disturb its physiology," said Radosław Ratajszczak, President of the Wroclaw Zoo.

The zoo has no plans to keep their unexpected arrival and are looking to find it a new home in another zoo.
