Azerbaijan's Defence Ministry claimed Saturday morning to have carried out strikes through the night against targets in the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

A video uploaded by the Defence Ministry of Azerbaijan allegedly shows military equipment being targeted and eliminated by the airstrikes.

Armenian officials reported that Azerbaijan carried out strikes on the capital of self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh late on Friday, killing one and injuring four people.

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry accused Armenian forces of shelling Agdam, Terter and Barda regions and attacking other areas.

Both sides reported destroying military equipment belonging to their adversary.

Officials for the self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh said more than 150 servicemen on their side have been killed so far.

Azerbaijani authorities haven't given details on its military casualties but said 19 civilians have been killed and 55 more have been wounded.

This is the biggest escalation in years of the decades-old conflict killing dozens and leaving scores wounded.

Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by the Armenian government since 1994 at the end of a separatist war following the breakup of the Soviet Union three years earlier.

The region in the Caucasus Mountains of about 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), roughly the size of the US state of Delaware, is 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Armenian border.
