Montenegro kicked off its national competition on Friday to crown the nation's most laziest person to humour the stereotype of work-shy Montenegrins.

Several contestants laid down under a tree in Brezna in makeshift beds to begin their marathon rest.

The winner who "survives" lying in bed for the longest time will be awarded 300 euros (350 US dollars) and a title of the "laziest person" in Montenegro.

The village of Brezna near Pluzine, Montenegro, has run the competition for several years now, and with each passing year, more contestants apply for a chance to enjoy lying in bed for any number of days.

Food and water is provided by the organiser, and contestants are only allowed to get up from bed to use the toilet.

Last year's competition was cancelled because of the pandemic, but the 2019 winner managed to snooze through seven straight days and nights.

Dubravka Arsic from Podgorica, one of the contestants, told The Associated Press that she joined the competition to "rest a bit" and sent a strong message to her opponents that they need to quit the contest immediately because she "will win."
